Today we’re going to talk about a very important topic that I know a lot of you care deeply about and that is How To Capture Email Addresses from your YouTube Viewers, and what to do with that list after you get them.
Why capture email addresses from your YouTube viewers ?
As a YouTube creator because you can’t control these platforms that you’re using, and as wonderful as they are, they’re someone else’s cocktail party that we’re attending.
Although we’re having a great time and we’re building our little friendship circles, even if we really want viewers to stay committed to us in the long run and really be a part of our community (to be a little bit more intimately) we have to have a direct line to them. Therefore, you have to have their contact information.
The best way to do that these days is via email and/or even mobile marketing as well.
If you can get your viewers contact information using other methods then those are really great ways, but email is something that’s been around for a long time and it’s still extremely effective!
You can use your email list to send content that doesn’t really work as well in a video format. You can send updates about other announcements or things that are happening, or content that you think will help your viewer.
How can I capture the email addresses from my YouTube viewers ?
In your YouTube “description box” you can post a hyper-link offering (what I call) an ethical bribe. This can be a free ebook or a cheat sheet; put something that will be relevant to your viewer. You can script the text as follows,
… if you’re interested you can click the link below and get a free eBook called …
Okay, that sounds great and I want to build my audience with an email list and there’re plenty of platforms I can use to do that.
But how do I go about doing that if the problem with this method, specifically on YouTube, is that I don’t want to send people away from my YouTube channel because that ends their viewing session which is really bad for my SEO. What are some alternatives?
Alternative methods to capture the email address from your YouTube viewers ?
Use the tools that are built into your YouTube account.
The one thing about viewers, as many of you know, is that they really like hanging out on YouTube’s amazing platform, so all the tools that are in there are “actually” going to help “you” as a creator. In other words these are already customed by YouTube for the experience of the viewer!
Things like the “Description Section“, as mundane as that sounds, is a a very useful area. The other thing is that (thank the gods) YouTube came out with the “Interactive Cards.”
This is an interactive “call to action” (CTA) feature. So instead of the viewer saying, “hopefully I’ll find it in the description”, the interactive card is there to remove that viewer’s doubt. However, try not to use too many CTAs because then you will confuse your viewer and they may just ignore them.
Also, try to stay really focused. Remember, things like an interactive card that’s going to pop out at the top of the screen is ideally going to take your viewer to another place where they can sign up.
After that, use your email marketing scripts via your landing pages to let people know,
Okay, great! Thank you so much for signing up. You’re on the list and here is your resource
Remind them to don’t forget and make sure that the’re subscribed to your YouTube channel.
With that strategy you’re reiterating to someone who has given you their contact information. Plus you’re going to be sending them emails saying…” go watch this video… or go watch that video…” depending on the relationship that you will build up.
You can really really boost your “views” because you now have a direct line to your viewer plus you’re protecting your YouTube subscription feed.
How do I boost my YouTube views?
Everybody (usually almost) checks their email multiple times a day, even if they skim it, they’ll see your email message and they’ll likely click the link to go and watch your video, as opposed to the subscription icon on YouTube where they can choose to see it or not.
Popular YouTuber, Tim Schmoyer, uses a combination of different strategies. He actually ends the viewing session.
As a newbie building your channel, you don’t want to do that because if you did that all the time, even though the goal for every video is to get viewers to your email list, that’s going to be really hard for you to rank ANY video after that.
The key is to have one CTA. It always should be the same :
- send the viewer to your email list;
- give them your free eBook.
Once viewers take you up on that offer and leave your videos once, there’s never a reason why they need to leave another video again. After someone signs up for the email list…
How do you then cultivate a good relationship with someone?
Every viewers worst nightmare is being tricked into giving their email address but then there’s no value to it. Hence the reason exactly why viewers don’t like to join email CTAs.
You have to understand that they have joined because, not only do they want the resource you promised, but they want to get to know you better and one of the major things that most people forget is how important sending regular emails is to them. The most effective strategy all successful online marketers/bloggers/and service providers use is an “autoresponder“.
Let’s say that they signed up yesterday and got your promised gift. If you have a quality autoresponder like AWeber, it will automatically send out on day two probably your guide to video creation. Then it’s another email on day four that sends out another newsworthy tip/strategy to help them in their business.
Literally with your autoresponder it you create links to every single way they can connect with you or understand you or get to know you better, example:
- here’s a resources page;
- here’s where all my number one videos are
Remember that as soon as the viewer signs up, follow up automatically with a welcome email that says,
“Hey Welcome. Here are other places you can connect with me:
- Subscribe to the podcast;
- subscribe to the YouTube channel;
- Go look at my tech page if you’re interested in the kind of equipment I’m using; etc..
List those key things that they probably have no idea about that might be on your website or your other social assets such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, et al
The key things to think of with your email list is don’t just try to do it to get more views to your video. Don’t be selfish, just build a meaningful relationship to extract more value. Use it to give more value in ways that you can’t do normally on YouTube.
